Personal Loan Calculator Guide

What this calculator measures

This calculator separates the loan into four useful questions: how much is sanctioned, how much cash you receive after upfront charges, how much you repay through EMIs, and how much the borrowing costs over time.

That makes it different from a simple EMI calculator, which mainly answers the monthly-payment question.

Formula

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1) P = principal loan amount r = monthly interest rate n = number of monthly payments

For a zero-interest scenario, EMI is principal divided by the number of months.

Example

Example: ₹5,00,000 for 5 years at 12%

If the processing fee is 2%, ₹10,000 is deducted upfront, so the cash received is ₹4,90,000. The EMI and total interest are then calculated from the sanctioned ₹5,00,000 loan amount.

Why compare tenure and rate?

A lower rate can reduce both the EMI and total interest. A longer tenure can reduce the monthly EMI but generally spreads interest over more months. Use the comparison panels above to see the numerical effect for your inputs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a personal loan EMI the same as total borrowing cost?

No. EMI is the scheduled monthly payment. Borrowing cost can also include interest, processing fees, insurance or other upfront charges.

What does amount you receive mean?

It is the sanctioned loan amount minus the upfront processing fee and any other upfront cost entered in the calculator.

Why can a longer tenure cost more?

When the balance remains outstanding for more months, interest can accumulate over a longer period even though the monthly EMI may be lower.

Does this calculator predict lender approval?

No. It is a calculation tool. Approval, interest rate, fees and other terms depend on the lender and borrower profile.

How should I use the prepayment option?

Enter a planned one-time prepayment and the month in which you expect to make it. The calculator then estimates the shortened schedule and interest saving under that simplified assumption.
